Unique Family Breaks Cottages & Lodges

As a family owned business, one of our favourite collections on the Boutique Luxury Retreats Directory is the family breaks UK collection where we can showcase the gorgeous family retreats and luxury family cottages in our directory to our ideal guests; families and multigenerational families.

It’s not just about making sure that they are all boutique and luxury retreats in this collection, it’s also about understanding what families and extended families need to make their holiday relaxed, happy and fun for everyone.

Not all of you, even with a very healthy budget, necessarily want complete luxury for a family holiday, so sometimes we look a bit more holistically in this collection and go for those family retreats with other criteria, like how easy it is to walk to the beach, how many dogs are allowed, whether there’s a great shower room downstairs to get everyone clean from beach activities before they come in the main house.
A big factor to take in for our family when we’re looking to book a luxury family cottage, is are there enough bathrooms, are there extra beds to allow a bit of bed hopping between small children during the night and are there lots of things to do if the weather is awful! Having a large playroom with games like table tennis, pool and table football is always a safe wet weather plan and if you can find a family break in the UK with a private indoor pool to be able to use, that is always a winner for all family generations.

Luxury Family Breaks: How To Plan Your Holidays

Luxury Family Friendly Cottages Amenities to Pick

When you’re booking a family holiday, the best places are the ones that feel relaxed and effortless — where everything’s been thought of. That’s exactly what we look for in our luxury family friendly cottages. These properties aren’t just luxury; they’re practical too, with family-focused features that make all the difference. Think spacious kitchens, plenty of bathrooms, utility rooms, and enclosed gardens for peace of mind. For younger children, a playroom packed with toys or space to roam can be a game changer, while snugs, drawing rooms, and cosy libraries give older generations a quiet spot to unwind. Our family retreats also shine when it comes to fun extras — from private swimming pools and games rooms full of activities, to tennis courts, football pitches, outdoor kitchens, hot tubs, firepits, and an outdoor bath or plunge pool. Whether it’s a space for the whole family to gather, or room to spread out and relax, our Family Holiday Cottages collection is all about places that work for everyone — no compromises needed.

Best Destinations for Family Retreats in the UK

It’s also about location and some of you may choose to search by destination . Many of our family-friendly cottages are secluded properties in peaceful surroundings with breathtaking scenery.

Choose from many beautiful parts of the UK including Scotland’s beautiful backdrop, the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds or the coastal heaven of Devon.

All Types of Accommodations for Family Weekend Breaks

We think that if you are looking for a specific area and location, then it helps to be open minded about the type of accommodation for your family weekend break.

If you need to get away in the peak periods of high season and school holidays, then often you are restricted to a minimum of 7 night stays, which can be frustrating, especially with more traditional family holiday cottages.

The market is changing though and our owners are listening to what their guests want and one of these requirements is for shorter and weekend mini breaks. Often it’s the more contemporary accommodation offerings such as our cabin retreats collection or the hotels  that can offer more flexibility.

Luxury Family Retreats – FAQs

  1. What should I do if I have specific requirements for my family holiday that aren’t answered in the retreat listing? On every retreat listing, there is an enquiry button for you to use and send specific questions and concerns to the owner of the retreat directly.
  2. What would you say are the most important requirements of a successful family holiday?Be realistic about the age of your children and make sure that you are booking your family holiday cottage with their needs in mind, not yours! A sauna and a treatment room may be top of your list, but your active children may prefer a pool and a games room. Always make sure you have some wet weather plans up your sleave and lock the screens in the car, strictly for patience level emergencies, you’re on holiday to make memories.
  3. How do I tell if a holiday cottage is child friendly? On our listings we normally have a paragraph describing whether the retreat is child friendly and / or dog friendly. It’s really important to be staying in a lovely holiday cottage, but you also need it to be child friendly and relaxed so you can also relax yourself and not worry about any safety concerns or doing damage to the holiday cottage.
