This county is really two holidays about an hour apart. Give the first half to the Cotswolds, but go early — the coaches reach Bibury and Bourton by mid-morning. Then cross the Severn to the Forest of Dean, where you can be on the Wye by lunch and back in a wood-fired hot tub by dusk. Come in late October if you can, when Westonbirt is at its best.

Lovely Towns to Visit in Gloucestershire

Cheltenham is the highlight: a Regency spa town of wide tree-lined promenades and cream-stone crescents, with one of the best independent shopping quarters in the West around Montpellier and the Suffolks, a serious food scene, a racecourse hosting the Cheltenham Festival each March, and a calendar of literature, jazz, science and music festivals running most of the year. Beyond it, Cirencester was the second largest town in Roman Britain and still has the mosaics to show for it, Tewkesbury sits where the Severn meets the Avon beneath a Norman abbey, and Stow-on-the-Wold has the antique shops and market square. Gloucester has the cathedral and the docks, Coleford is the gateway to the forest, and the honey-stone villages of Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Campden are all within half an hour.
