Where to Stay in the Forest of Dean
Coleford & Newland — For the Heart of the Forest
Coleford puts you close to many of the Forest of Dean’s best-known places while still feeling properly rural once you leave town.
Puzzlewood lies just outside Coleford, its extraordinary moss-covered landscape of twisted roots, rocky pathways and ancient trees making it unlike almost anywhere else in the forest.
Nearby Clearwell Caves explores a completely different side of the area’s history beneath ground.
Newland, meanwhile, gives you countryside, village life and quick access to both the Forest and Wye Valley.

Walk down towards the River Wye and you’ll find the old hand-pulled ferry beside the Saracens Head at Symonds Yat East — one of two traditional ferries on this stretch of river.
It’s still a working crossing rather than simply something preserved for visitors, although operation depends on river levels and weather, so check with the Saracens Head before setting out.
