    Burgh Island Hotel

A truly unique Art Deco island hotel in Devon

Let go of your inner Gatsby on a private island hotel like no other. Just 18 miles from the city of Plymouth, the Burgh Island Hotel is a step back in time and a luxury experience.

After being greeted by a personal driver, you’ll be driven to the 26-acre, secluded island by Land Rover. If the weather is fine, you’ll be transported across the water by the world’s only working sea tractor.

Upon arrival, guests have exclusive access to the island, where they are free to explore the grounds and natural seawater mermaid pool.

The sea views and rugged coastlines provide stunning views from anywhere on the island while each boutique room has been bespoke designed to provide its own beauty.

The Art Deco décor makes this the perfect venue for weddings, weekend parties or celebrations, and guests can jive to the sound of the jazz pianist and live band supplied by the hotel in the opulent Palm Court Lounge.

You’ll also be joining an impressive list of guests who have enjoyed the magical atmosphere. Illustrious guests have included Agatha Christie, Noel Coward, Winston Churchill, Edward VIII, Wallis Simpson and even the Beatles. In fact, the history of the hotel has entertainment and spectacle built into it’s foundations. The original prefabricated wooden house was built in the 1890s by music hall star George H Chirgwin. It was subsequently sold to filmmaker Archibald Nettlefold – one of the restaurants still bears his name. He built a more substantial hotel in the 1920s, that included the Captain’s Cabin, literally part of the upper deck of a Royal Navy sailing warship! And the rest, as they say, is history.

You can expect to be treated very much like the starlet with a concierge service, treatment room and sauna to compliment the outdoor pool. Further, spoil yourself with world-class cuisine in either the Grand Ballroom or the Nettlefold restaurant.

    The Area

During the day, there is plenty to do, too. Aside from the plethora of golden beaches to visit, the island is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is littered with walking and cycling routes. And off the South Devon coast, you can go shark fishing, surfing or paddle boarding. Alternatively, you can choose to just kick back and enjoy the scenery and the wildlife it attracts.

    Location

The hotel is located 1.4 miles from Bigbury on Sea town centre. Being situated on it own tidal island, you can be collected from there in one of two ways. At low tide, a Land Rover can collect you, but at high tide, the unique sea tractor can collect you. By car, you can follow the A38 Devon Expressway, come off at the A3121 exit, and then follow Knightsbridge Road. By train, the nearest stations to Bigbury on Sea are either Plymouth or Toners, both of which are 19 miles away.
