Alfriston Cabins, South Downs
Two oak-framed woodland cabins in the South Downs National Park
Romantic cabins able to sleep up to four guests overlooking the River Cuckmere, with wood-fired hot tubs, log burners and peaceful hillside views – just an hour from London and a short walk from the village of Alfriston
Hidden among private woodland on the slopes of the South Downs, Alfriston Cabins offer a peaceful escape where the pace naturally slows. Perched on a hillside above the treetops, the setting feels wonderfully secluded, yet the village of Alfriston is just a short walk away, with welcoming pubs, a village shop and easy access to the wider countryside.
The site is home to two beautifully crafted oak-framed cabins – Badger’s Rest and Foxes Hollow, tucked quietly among the woodland . Each retreat is positioned for privacy, allowing guests to enjoy the landscape in their own way, whether that’s from the warmth of the log burner inside or the hot tub under dark skies outside. There are a further three shepherd’s huts on a different part of the site, in the apple orchard.
Award-winning and carefully run with sustainability in mind, the cabins feel closely connected to the landscape around them. Ideal for couples, small families or friends travelling together, they offer a relaxed base for exploring the South Downs – or simply settling in, lighting the fire and letting the evening unfold slowly.

Sustainable Stays
Sustainability plays an important role at Alfriston Cabins, shaping how the site is run while still allowing guests to enjoy a comfortable countryside escape.
Solar panels help power the cabins, and energy-efficient appliances are used throughout to keep the environmental impact low. Wood for the hot tubs, firepit and log burner is locally sourced, helping to support the local area while keeping things simple and authentic.
Guests are also encouraged to enjoy local produce during their stay. Fresh local eggs are often available, alongside wine and beer from nearby vineyards and breweries – a small way of connecting your stay with the landscape around you.
An EV charger is available on site, and guests arriving by train can arrange collection using the owners’ privately licensed electric vehicle, making it possible to leave the car at home altogether.
Dog-Friendly Stays
Up to two medium well behaved dogs are welcome in each cabin, making it easy to bring your four-legged companion along for the adventure.
The South Downs offers endless opportunities for walks, from quiet woodland trails to open hilltop paths along the South Downs Way. The nearby village of Alfriston is also dog-friendly, with several welcoming pubs where muddy boots and paws are part of the atmosphere.
For a day by the sea, Birling Gap welcomes dogs year-round, offering dramatic views of the Seven Sisters cliffs and plenty of space to explore.
Explore the South Downs
Alfriston Cabins sit within the rolling landscape of the South Downs National Park, in East Sussex, overlooking the River Cuckmere, one of England’s most distinctive countryside settings. Chalk hills ripple across the horizon, woodland pockets shelter wildlife, and open skies stretch in every direction – a landscape that feels open, peaceful and deeply connected to the countryside around it.
Overlooking the gentle bends of the River Cuckmere, the cabins enjoy a peaceful waterside setting where the river shapes the landscape around them. Guests can walk along the river route to the beach, which is right next to Friston Forest. Canoe and Kayak along the calm, winding water of the River Cuckmere – taking note of the tide patterns.
The nearby village of Alfriston lies within easy walking distance, known for its historic streets and relaxed pace of life. Independent pubs, cafés and a village shop make it easy to pick up supplies or settle in for a long lunch before wandering back to the cabins. From the village, footpaths lead straight into the countryside, including stretches of the South Downs Way, making it easy to explore on foot or by bike.
Although the cabins feel wonderfully secluded, the coast is surprisingly close and approximately 4 miles away. The nearest beaches are Cuckmere Haven, Birling Gap and Seaford. A little further afield, you can visit the beaches and pier at Eastbourne.
The area is also part of the South Downs International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the best places in England for stargazing. With very little light pollution across the surrounding hills and countryside, clear nights often reveal a remarkable canopy of stars – something guests regularly enjoy from the warmth of the hot tub or beside the firepit.
