    Romantic Breaks & Mini-moons

The Owl House lends itself naturally to time set aside for just the two of you. With its four-poster bed, copper bathing and quiet hillside setting, it offers the kind of privacy that allows you to properly slow down and be present.

Mornings arrive gently here. Light spills through the windows, the hills shift colour as the day unfolds, and breakfast can be taken slowly at the table or outside in the courtyard (in the sunshine or under the pavilion roof if it happens to rain). There’s no need to rush – perhaps a walk up the Skirrid before the world feels fully awake, or a swim in the natural pool followed by time in the sauna.

Wonderful Escapes at Wern-y-Cwm specialises in Farm to Folk catering and you may pick herbs, fruit and veg from the communal gardens. The kitchen is set up for real cooking or if you prefer order meals from the Farm Kitchen, left in the fridge for your arrival.

Evenings are where the setting truly comes into its own. The copper bath fills, the firepit glows, and the dark sky overhead begins to reveal its stars. With little light pollution and only the sounds of the farm settling for the night, it feels intimate without being isolated. The wood burner inside adds another layer of warmth, creating a space that’s cosy rather than showy.

Whether you’re celebrating a mini-moon, marking an anniversary or simply carving out space away from everyday demands, The Owl House offers romance that feels effortless – rooted in landscape, comfort and time together.

    Dog-Friendly Stays

The Owl House welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs, making it easy to bring everyone along for a countryside escape. The private courtyard garden is  enclosed, offering space for dogs to relax while you unwind.

Beyond the gate, the 30 acre farm becomes their playground. With walking trails leading straight up the Skirrid and countless routes across the wider Brecon Beacons, there’s no shortage of hills, woodland paths and open meadows to explore together. Riverside walks and gentle valley routes offer something slower-paced too, depending on the day.

Nearby Abergavenny and surrounding villages are known for their welcoming atmosphere, with many local pubs and cafés happy to accommodate four-legged guests. After a long walk, it’s easy to settle in somewhere relaxed before heading back to the warmth of the wood burner.

For those who love travelling with dogs but don’t want to compromise on comfort or setting, The Owl House strikes an easy balance.

    Sustainability at Wonderful Escapes

Sustainability shapes daily life here with The Owl House proudly achieving an A rating in it’s EPC. Furnishings are often reclaimed or upcycled, energy is supplied  by air source heating along with solar panels, and logs for fires come from fallen trees on the farm.

The land itself is managed organically, with no-dig gardening, no artificial fertilisers and habitat piles to support biodiversity. Over recent years, 600 trees have been planted and 10 acres of wildflower meadow created, encouraging bees, butterflies and wildlife including owls, red kites, hedgehogs and even pine martens.

A Hillside Hideaway bordering the Brecon Beacons

The Owl House is set in a private creative and wildlife retreat near Abergavenny in Wales, close to the Herefordshire border, with views to Cloucestershire  and framed by the rolling contours of the Brecon Beacons. This is a landscape shaped by hills, pasture and wide skies, where views stretch across valleys to Norman Castles and light shifts beautifully throughout the day.

From the cabin, a private trail leads directly up Skirrid, a distinctive peak with far-reaching views across seven counties. The surrounding 30 acres of meadows and woodland feel quietly removed, yet the market town of Abergavenny – known for its strong food culture and independent spirit – is just a short drive away.

The wider area is rich in agricultural heritage and outdoor adventure. The Wye Valley, the Black Mountains and the broader Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) landscape are all within easy reach, offering walking, water sports and scenic drives. Closer to home, local pubs, farm shops and small producers reflect the region’s reputation for good food and welcoming hospitality.

It’s a setting that balances privacy with possibility – rural, expansive and deeply connected to its surroundings, yet never feeling isolated.
