Currently, that means The Fold: four individually designed suites inside a beautifully restored 18th-century stable block. It sits on a working farm just outside Cambridge. Each suite opens onto a shared French-inspired courtyard garden, with 25 acres of parkland, ancient meadows and woodland beyond. The village of Histon, with its independent cafés and restaurants, is a five-minute walk away — and Cambridge itself only a short drive.

Across the collection, however, the emphasis stays the same.

Character first. Original features. Private terraces for a slow breakfast. A courtyard made for evenings that run long. Somewhere that feels a world away, despite being minutes from the city.

Cambridge: the city on your doorstep

It’s rare to get a city as good as Cambridge this close to a proper countryside escape — and it’s worth making the most of both.

Spend the day punting along the River Cam, past the city’s famous college backs. Then wander the cobbled streets and courtyards on foot. The Fitzwilliam Museum is free to visit and genuinely world-class, while the city’s market square and independent shops suit an unhurried afternoon perfectly. Cambridge’s restaurant scene is also one of the best in the East of England, from riverside pubs to destination dining. So there’s rarely a reason to rush back.

The real trick is the contrast. A morning in the thick of college life. An afternoon among Cambridgeshire’s fens and farmland. An evening back in a courtyard garden with nothing left to do. Few UK cities let you step so cleanly out of the bustle and into somewhere properly quiet.

Cambridge station has direct trains from London King’s Cross in under an hour. Meanwhile, the A14 and M11 make it straightforward by road. London Stansted Airport is around 40 minutes away too, making it easy to reach for visitors from further afield.
